setup shot

setup shot, originally uploaded by Music Man5.

I was photographing some magazines and trying a different lighting setup. Both flashes are in eTTL mode fired by an ST-E2 on my 40D. The flashes are bouncing off a white ceiling.

It worked failrly well but not well enough in my opinion. Next month I intend to try a one light setup using a silver umbrella. Check back next month!!!

Photek Softlighter II

Softlighter II, originally uploaded by Music Man5.

Here is my new Photek Softlighter II in action! In this photo I have 2 Canon Speedlites in use, the 580EX II and the 430EX II. I had done some shots with 1 flash and wanted to see what the difference was with 2 and the difference was more power!! Had to move the Softlighter further away from the subject. But this is a great option to have (using multiple flashes) for those occasions when one needs more light.

One note: You have to put some weight on your light stand or this puppy will over balance.

Overall I love this device. Someday I will get a smaller one to use as a fill light.

Here are the comments on posted on the B&H Photo website (where I purchased this product):

Wow! I wish I had started with this as my first light source, I wouldn't have so many others now!

The light produced by this product is absolutely wonderful.

It takes more than a moment to set it up but I will not hold that against them!!

shooting tethered in the studio

I do very little studio work at this point but when I do I like to shoot tethered. I can review my work a lot more quickly and consequently get more done. I use a product called Breeze Systems DSLR Remote Pro and highly recommend it. Here is a review of DSLR Remote Pro and the BreezeSystem website is here.

I have also used Adobe Lightroom to shoot tethered and if you already have Lightroom I'd recommend giving it a try. I recently found this short article by Scott Kelby that discusses how to use Lightroom when tethered. To read Mr. Kelby's fine article click here. For Canon shooters you will need to read this also.
